The only surviving son of Joe Biden, the 46th president of the United States, Hunter Biden is an American lawyer and businessman who was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on February 4, 1970. The Yale-educated attorney has worked for a number of law companies, banks, and lobbying firms, raising concerns about whether he has benefited by his father’s position. He has acknowledged having a cocaine and alcohol addiction that lasted for decades. A special counsel was appointed by the U.S. Justice Department in 2023 to look into Hunter Biden’s actions. Hunter Biden Personal Life
Since the early years of the twenty-first century and during his time at his lobbying firm, Hunter Biden has struggled with alcohol and drugs, as has been widely reported. He received alcoholism treatment in 2003 and became a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. After multiple relapses, he tested positive for cocaine in 2014 and was released from the U.S. Navy Reserve, where he had been assigned the year before.
Hunter Biden’s life took a turn for the worst after Beau Biden passed away from brain cancer in 2015. Due to their deteriorating marriage, Hunter and Kathleen Biden formally separated in October 2015. In 2017, they got divorced.
According to news reports, Hunter Biden was romantically involved with Beau Biden’s widow, Hallie Olivere Biden, in 2017. Two years later, their relationship would come to an end. Beau experienced several episodes of drug and alcohol abuse throughout this time, which were followed by attempts at rehabilitation. Hunter Biden and Lunden Alexis Roberts of Arkansas had a daughter, Navy Joan Roberts, in 2018. Hunter Biden stated that he had “no recollection” of his meeting with Roberts in his 2021 memoir, Beautiful Things. Biden wed South African filmmaker Melissa Cohen in May 2019. Biden wed Kathleen Buhle in 1993.[2] They have three daughters: Maisey, Finnegan, and Naomi (named after Biden’s sister).[10] October 2015 saw the couple’s official separation, and in 2017 they got divorced. Buhle’s story of the romance is chronicled in her 2022 memoir If We Break.
In 2016, Biden started dating Hallie Olivere Biden, the widow of his brother. In 2019, the partnership came to an end.
Biden was also romantically involved with Zoe Kestan from 2017 to 2018.
Lunden Alexis Roberts gave birth to Biden’s fourth daughter in August 2018 in Arkansas. A DNA test, carried out as part of a paternity suit filed by Roberts in May 2019, verified paternity after Biden first rejected the child’s paternity. After Biden agreed to give Roberts $20,000 per month in child support, the lawsuit was settled in March 2020.
In September 2022, Biden submitted a motion to lower his child support payments due to his decreased income. Roberts objected to this request and asked the Arkansas court to change the child’s last name to Biden so that his daughter might gain from being associated with Biden’s family. The disagreement between Biden and Roberts was resolved in June 2023. Biden agreed to pay his daughter an undisclosed monthly child support payment until the daughter turns 18 and to send his daughter some of his paintings as part of the settlement. Biden also consented to help pay for education. Her request to have their daughter’s last name changed was granted by Roberts.The issue garnered substantial media coverage.

Hunter Biden's Career
After returning to Wilmington, Delaware, with his family, Hunter Biden started working as a consultant and lawyer for MBNA America, a bank holding firm, and soon advanced to the position of executive vice president. Like the majority of financial service companies, MBNA made significant contributions to Sen. Joe Biden and other politicians from both major parties.
Because Joe Biden supported contentious credit card legislation that consumer groups opposed but MBNA supported while Hunter Biden was employed by the corporation, his affiliation with MBNA drew accusations of improper behaviour and conflict of interest. In 1998, Hunter Biden departed MBNA to work on e-commerce strategy in the Commerce Department under President Bill Clinton. He was a co-founder of Oldaker, Biden & Belair, a lobbying firm, in 2001. Online gambling was one of the many concerns the firm lobbied on. When his father was selected as Barack Obama’s campaign mate for vice president in 2008, Hunter Biden ceased lobbying.
Hunter Biden and his uncle James Biden acquired Paradigm Global Advisors, a hedge fund business, in 2006. The fund was linked to multiple fraud claims during the four years the Bidens held it, including a Texas businessman found guilty of operating a massive Ponzi scheme. The Bidens liquidated the fund in 2010, denied any misconduct, and were never charged.
However, Hunter Biden’s commercial activities have raised concerns about how much he utilised his family name to close transactions. Hunter Biden’s former business associate Devon Archer told a congressional committee in 2023 that the younger Biden enticed possible partners with “the illusion of access to his father.”
Hunter Biden met with the CEO of BHR, a Chinese private equity firm, while in China in 2013 with his father, who was the vice president at the time. Shortly after the meeting, Biden was given an unpaid seat on the company’s board of directors. In the end, he would acquire a 10 percent ownership interest in the company.
Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine were far more complex and problematic because his father oversaw the Obama administration’s relations with Ukraine. In 2014, Hunter Biden joined the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian oil company, where he was paid up to $1.2 million annually. The country’s top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, was widely viewed as corrupt, and Vice President Biden was pressuring the Ukrainian government to remove him.
Shokin was finally ousted from office by the Ukrainian parliament in 2016, but Republican Party members claim that Shokin’s removal was prompted by senior Biden’s demand since Shokin had been looking into Burisma. According to some detractors, Burisma management paid both Bidens millions of dollars in exchange for their efforts that led to Shokin’s dismissal. Regarding the Burisma case, there has never been any evidence of criminal misconduct by either Biden. In 2019, Hunter Biden resigned from the Burisma board.
The baseless accusation against Joe Biden prompted President Donald Trump to attempt withholding aid to Ukraine in 2019. Trump implied that he would release the monies he was withholding as soon as Volodymyr Zelensky announced a probe into the Bidens during a phone conversation with the recently elected Ukrainian president. For this behaviour, President Trump was later impeached.
Hunter Biden's Legal troubles
Hunter Biden revealed in 2020 that he has been under investigation by the Justice Department since late 2018. David C. Weiss, the U.S. attorney for Delaware, headed the investigation, which focused on possible criminal violations of money-laundering and tax laws. Hunter Biden consented to enter a guilty plea to two misdemeanour counts of late filing of his 2016 and 2017 taxes in June 2023. Additionally, he agreed to terms that would prevent him from facing a felony charge of lying when he purchased a weapon in 2018 by claiming to be sober. However, the plea agreement fell through when the judge in the case declined to act as what she referred to as “a rubber stamp” on the accord, which some claimed showed the first son’s preferential treatment.
Prosecutors filed court records stating that they anticipated the Biden case to proceed to trial after U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced in August 2023 that Weiss had been appointed as the special counsel overseeing the probe. Biden was found guilty on all three counts after his trial on the gun-related charges in June 2024. As a result, he became the first child of a serving president of the United States to be found guilty of a felony. In his federal tax case, Biden entered a guilty plea in September 2024 to three felony counts and six misdemeanours.
Additionally, Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy declared in September 2023 that House of Representatives committees would start hearings on Joe Biden’s impeachment. Among other things, the committees would look into whether the president profited from Hunter Biden’s commercial activities.
