Ashwin’s consistent performance at the local level helped him stand out and gain a contract with the BCCI in 2009, in addition to helping Tamil Nadu win the state one-day cup. Ashwin was called in to stand in for Harbhajan, who declined to participate in the first two home games against South Africa in early 2010. Regretfully, he was not given the much-coveted India Test cap. After their outstanding achievements for the Chennai franchise in the subsequent IPL, India decided to try something different in June 2010 when they travelled to Zimbabwe for a tri-series.

He became the third Indian off-spinner to take 25 or more wickets in a series (26), joining Erapalli Prasanna (32) and Harbhajan Singh (32). In November 2013, Ashwin made his second Test century and joined Rohit Sharma for a record-breaking 280-run seventh-wicket partnership in the opening Test of the home series against the West Indies. Later, Ashwin made another record when he got his 100th wicket in his 18th Test match.

Ashwin has consistently performed well since the 2015–2017 season, which has been primarily centred at home, depending more on his guile and dishonesty with his stock deliveries than on excessive experimentation. He had now gained enough self-assurance as a bowler to rarely use the carrom ball and other variations, instead depending on his off-break and floater as his stock deliveries. However, he has a very bad record while playing abroad and finds it difficult to hold the Kookaburra and get as much out of the ball as he does when using the SG ball in India. While playing for the Kookaburra in Sri Lanka, he demonstrated his growth by taking 21 wickets and making a substantial contribution to India’s series triumph, which was their first on the island since 1993. In the next home season, he went on to take a lot of wickets, stealing 31 in four home Test matches against South Africa.

While Moeen performed admirably against a formidable Indian batting order, Ashwin struggled against the Dukes in the latter two Test matches of the England trip.
