Rishabh Pant Career
First Stage
After making his first-class debut in the Ranji Trophy on October 22, 2015, Pant made his List A debut the following month in the 2015–16 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
When Pant scored 308 runs in an innings against Maharashtra during the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy, he became the third-youngest Indian player to hit a triple century in first-class cricket.
Pant needed just 48 balls to score the fastest century in Ranji Trophy history during Delhi’s November 8, 2016, match against Jharkhand.
In February 2017, Pant was chosen to captain Delhi for the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He took the place of Gautam Gambhir, who had led Delhi to the championship game the season before. According to Delhi coach Bhaskar Pillai, it was a “consensus decision” to prepare Pant for the future.
On January 14, 2018, during the 2017–18 Zonal T20 League encounter against Delhi, Pant scored the second-fastest century in Twenty20 history. Pant scored 100 runs off of 32 balls.

IPL Career
Pant was signed by the Delhi Daredevils ahead of the 2016 Indian Premier League on the same day that he scored a century to lead the India U-19 team to victory in the 2016 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Pant led Delhi over the Gujarat Lions by eight wickets in his third game of the year after scoring 69 runs off of 40 balls. In the 2017 season, he scored 97 runs off of 43 balls against the same opponents.
During the 2018 Indian Premier League, Pant hit an unbroken 128 off 63 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad, setting a record for the highest individual score by an Indian player in IPL history.
He also became the second-youngest player to score a century in IPL history. His 128 runs, which accounted for 68.4% of the team total, was the second-highest percentage of runs scored by a single batsman in an IPL game. In March 2021, Pant was named captain of the Delhi Capitals for the 2021 Indian Premier League after regular captain Shreyas Iyer was sidelined for the entire season due to an injury. Additionally, he was retained as the Indian Premier League’s captain for 2022.
Going International
In January 2017, Pant was a member of the Indian Twenty20 International (T20I) team for their series against England. He made his debut for India in the third Twenty20 International match against England on February 1, 2017, at Bangalore’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Pant made history by being the youngest player to represent India in a Twenty20 International match at the age of 19 years and 120 days.
In February of that year, he was added to the India T20I squad for the 2018 Nidahas Trophy. In July 2018, Pant was a member of the Indian Test team for the England series. He made his Test debut against England on August 18, 2018. He became the first Indian batsman to achieve the milestone in Test cricket after striking a six early in the series. On September 11, 2018, Pant scored his first-ever century against England, making him the first Indian wicketkeeper to make a Test century in England and the second-youngest wicketkeeper in history. The following month, he was part of India’s One Day International (ODI) team for their series against the West Indies.
He played his first-ever One-Day International (ODI) for India against the West Indies on October 21, 2018. During the first Test match against Australia in December 2018, Pant got eleven wickets, the most of any Indian wicketkeeper in a Test match. In January 2019, during the fourth Test match against Australia, Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to reach a century in a Test match against Australia.
In order to replace Shikhar Dhawan, who suffered a broken hairline in his left thumb during the team’s match against Australia, Pant was added to India’s Cricket World Cup squad in June 2019. Following the World Cup, Pant was named the team’s rising star by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The 2019–20 home season was anticipated to be pivotal for Pant, as MS Dhoni had announced that he would be taking a vacation from international cricket. India started the season looking for a new wicket-keeping mainstay, with Pant among the front-runners. However, because of the left-hander’s lacklustre performances and the emergence of KL Rahul as a viable wicket-keeping option, Pant dropped further down the rankings.
The terrible 2020 IPL season didn’t help either. After scoring 1172 runs at a strike rate of 168 in his previous two seasons, Pant only managed to score 343 runs at a strike rate of 113. During a losing attempt in the finals, he scored his only fifty.
Pant was consequently excluded from the 2020–21 limited-overs squad that was competing in Australia. He was excluded from the starting eleven for the first Test in Adelaide, although he was still able to hold onto his place in the Test squad.
During this period, Pant was severely criticised by fans and the media. Derogatory analogies to Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni were frequent. The supporters would sometimes chant, “Dhoni! Dhoni!” when Pant made a mistake on the pitch.
India lost the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2020–21 by 8 wickets after being bowled out for 36 in the second innings, despite holding a significant first-inning lead. Wriddhiman Saha was therefore passed over for the second test in Melbourne in favour of Rishabh Pant.
Despite scoring 29 in the first innings of the Melbourne Test, Pant’s hit in Sydney changed his career. He scored a counterattacking 97 runs off just 118 balls on the last day, with 97 overs left, and teamed up with Cheteshwar Pujara to score 148 runs. The game ended up being drawn.
In September 2021, Pant played for India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. At the annual ICC Awards in January 2022, Pant was named the 2021 ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year. In the second match against Sri Lanka in March 2022, Pant became the first Indian batsman to reach a half-century in a Test match, surpassing Kapil Dev’s record. He hit his half-century in just 28 deliveries.
In May of that year, Pant was named the vice-captain of the Indian squad for the 2022 India tour of South Africa. However, a day before the series’ opening match, Pant was named captain when India’s captain, KL Rahul, was declared out due to an injury. Pant became the second youngest captain in history when he captained India in a Twenty20 International match at the age of twenty-four years and 248 days. In July 2022, during the final match of India’s tour of England, Pant made 125 runs and remained unflinching as he achieved his first century in one-day international cricket.
